The keen gardeners who own this town house in Surrey were very specific in their brief: they wanted a water garden, and no lawn. We obliged with a formal wall fountain and canal near the house, running into an informal waterfall and a pond at the end of the garden. We exploited the site’s natural two metre fall, using steps to create separate areas, while the planting along the edges of the stone paths gives a stimulating mix of textures and colours. It’s an atmospheric, informal space with plenty of visual interest, accompanied by the music of water.
