The Woodland Garden – Hampshire

This secret, mysterious garden, hidden in the woods, was designed as a magical garden for a family to wander through, dream in and enjoy. The owners are plant-lovers, so the whole garden is designed to showcase different forms, textures and colours. Generously-planted beds divide the garden and conceal one area from the next, while contrasting with the smooth lawns. The geometrical shapes of tightly- clipped yew cones, hedging and perennials complement the shrubs and blowsy plant forms within a harmonious garden design. A set of worn brick steps lead to a Victorian sunken greenhouse.

The garden design reveals its different facets through the seasons. In summer, foxgloves, roses, bellflowers, sedums and verbenas create a riot of colour and soft green textures; a seat under the old gnarled apple tree, and hidden seating in the butterfly garden provide intimate places to sit and contemplate. In winter, grasses and seed heads rimed with frost emerging through the mist create stillness, tranquillity and a sense of being frozen in time.
